Farmers Resource Group ( Profile


Introduction

The name of the organization is Farmers Resource Group (FRG) and is a non profit, non political, non religious and neither discrimination in race, local NGO

Farmer Resource Group consists of people of different disciplines in agricultural practices, promotions, activities and other member activists of seven hundred sixty four (764) across the country.

According to 1987 census, Somali people are classified according to their livelihood, they are 24% farmers, 42% pastoralists, 17% is a third cluster of fishermen along the coastline and riverside, while 11% are traders. The remaining percentage is urban dwellers. After the fell down of the central government of Somalia, farmers resource group has been launched by Somali intellectuals and activists, to provide promotions and upgrading mechanisms in crop production and to establish

(SEED MULTIPLICATION CENTER) to preserve the certified seeds in the country which has been tested genetically and environmentally in Somali climate with recommended agricultural practices and resistance to pests and diseases

In Somalia , However, receive two main rainfall seasons. I.e. Gu starting from March to may and Dayr starting from October to December.
There are also intermittent season initiated by the monsoons of Indian Ocean

I.e. Hagaa starting from June to August but very short in distribution and density. (hagaa covers in the southern coastline)

FRG, disseminate to the farmer's seasonal rainfall prediction forecast before the onset of the season. Hence, farmers will decide type of crop they will grow according to the predictions. If the forecast predict poor rainfall performance . FRG will recommend drought resistant crop and short period of growth varieties

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES OF FRG

1 - To provide modern techniques of production to the farmers.
2- To encourage the formers in their engagements.
3- To mobilize farmers to excavate canals for even distribution of water
4- To provide certified seeds to the farmers.
5- To supervise the prevailing pests and diseases and their control measures.
6- To encourage ecological seed and discourage genetically modified seeds.
7- Protection of environmental degradations in the country and preserve Somali fauna and flora for future purposes.
8- To create suitable market channels for the local producers
9- To provide best techniques of food storage.
10-To encourage animal draft techniques for tilling the soil.
SEED MULTIPLICATION CENTER
The center was created to preserve genetically and environmentally improved seeds by the researchers during the high days of Somalia . The land and running cost provided by the FRG activists monthly contributions,

later cash also earned from the sales of seeds to the farmers which is reasonably cheap.

Membership
We normally contribute US dollar 0.5 monthly per person to cover office rent and day to day activities of FRG such as fuel requirements for the seed multiplication center during land preparation.
FRG become a full member of STS Somalia member organizations in 2001.
